How rodents read freeze-thaw better than most drawings
If a joint can take water, it can take a mouse. Calgary’s climate writes that lesson every spring.

Rodents are outstanding building inspectors. They find the gap at the utility penetration, the void behind the rain screen, the unsealed control joint at grade. They find it at night, in weather, and without a drawing set.
Freeze-thaw is their ally. Water enters a hairline, expands, and leaves a path that was not on the original shop drawing. A loading-dock leveller that closed in October sits 12 mm off the slab in March. A weep that drained a cavity now functions as a corridor.
The corrective work is unglamorous and highly specific: backer rod and sealant with the right modulus, mesh that rodents cannot tear, hardware that facilities staff can actually maintain. It is closer to envelope remediation than to extermination, which is precisely the point.
When we write an assessment for a Calgary asset, the rodent section is a map of the building’s movement — not a list of bait stations. Bait is what you use while the map is being closed.
