What is structural pest control?
Not a synonym for spraying a building. A trade position: the highest-leverage intervention is closing the pathway.

Structural pest control is the practice of preventing and removing pest populations by correcting the building — not by treating the room. The object of the work is the envelope: walls, roofs, slabs, docks, penetrations, and the voids those assemblies create. Biology still matters. It is how you choose mesh size, inspection timing, and whether intervention is required. It is not the product you sell.
The term is often confused with ‘pest proofing’ or ‘IPM.’ Integrated pest management is a decision framework: inspect, identify, threshold, intervene, evaluate. Structural pest control is a trade position inside that framework. It says the highest-leverage intervention is exclusion hardware and detailing, and that chemistry is subordinate to a closed pathway.
In Calgary this distinction is not academic. A house mouse needs a gap of roughly 6 mm. Freeze-thaw, Chinook cycling, and rain-screen cavities produce those gaps on a schedule. A spring perimeter spray does not. If a vendor cannot show you the joint they closed, they have rented you a quiet month.
Operators should ask three questions of any pest proposal: What assembly failed. What material will close it. What evidence will I have in twelve months that it is still closed. Those answers are structural pest control. Everything else is a service call.
